Job Summary:
The Student Rights and Responsibilities Director serves as the lead administrator for managing the universitys educational and developmentally-based judicial and student conduct system. The Student Rights and Responsibilities unit administers and upholds the EWU Student Conduct Code and policies established by the university trustees.
The work of the Director is complex and requires knowledge of student affairs, student conduct, EWU policies and procedures, and federal/state/local laws and regulations. This position serves as a key campus resource in policy interpretation and regulatory responsibilities, represents EWU leadership to wide-ranging constituencies, and partners with community stakeholders on issues related to student conduct.
The successful candidate will have a proven track record of successful leadership in student affairs and will frame and implement a clear vision for Student Rights and Responsibilities and its role in supporting student development, retention, and success in pursuit of the universitys mission. The Director will be well-versed in national best practices and innovative in addressing current student conduct issues. He/she will play a leadership role on campus and in the Cheney community.
The Student Rights and Responsibilities Director is a full-time, twelve-month, administrative exempt position, reporting to the Associate Vice President for Student Life/Dean of Students. The position requires periodic work on weekends/evenings to respond to student needs, as appropriate

The salary for this position is $85,000 (minimum) up to $95,000. Where the hired candidate will begin within this range is dependent on education, experience, and skills. In addition to salary, the university offers a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, life and disability insurance and retirement. In addition, EWU offers generous vacation and sick leave accruals, 12 paid holidays per year and fringe benefits, such as tuition waiver for employees and eligible family members, discounted EWU sports tickets, full access to our campus workout facilities at a minimum fee and free transportation through STA buses. Required Qualifications:
Required Qualifications
- Masters in a field related to student development, counseling, law, or conflict transformation
- Three or more years of relevant professional experience in education, counseling, judicial, or policy work
- Knowledge of the Clery Act, Title IX, and other federal and legal regulations, policies and guidance related to student conduct processes and procedures in higher education.
- Knowledge of student development and emerging issues in college student conduct/discipline, with demonstrated ability to engage students in educational process
- Demonstrated maturity in leadership and decision-making
- Candidate must demonstrate interest, ability and/or experience promoting cultural competency, universal accessibility and/or diversity
Preferred Qualifications:

- J.D. or Ph.D. in a field related to student development, counseling, law, or conflict transformation.
- Five or more years of progressively responsible, full-time experience in student conduct administration/judicial affairs in a college or university setting
- Experience working with faculty with academic integrity and other conduct related issues.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate with students/parents/families and collaborate effectively with campus partners.

Job Duties:
Manage Student Rights and Responsibilities
- Create an environment in SRR (and in its partnerships with other departments) that promotes student development and education, fosters synergy and teamwork, and empowers and mentors staff
- Supervise SRR staff and volunteers, coordinate training, and provide appropriate mentorship and professional development
- Lead and support best practices for effective conflict resolution with students, reflecting an understanding of college student development issues and convening resources from multiple departments/constituencies to address complex student concerns
- Monitor and ensure compliance with relevant federal (Clery Act, Title IX, Drug-Free Schools, etc.) state, and local laws and regulations, as well as EWU policies and procedures
- Coordinate educational programming and information dissemination with colleges and academic leadership/units in order to articulate students rights and responsibilities and support their persistence and success
- Develop, implement, and analyze departmental goals and assessment initiatives in order to foster student retention and success
- Manage SRR budget and expenses
- Prepare and oversee development of departmental publications and statistical/annual reports (including those required by Clery Act)
- Manage and maintain Maxient student conduct database and confidential student records
- Review Washington Administrative Code for issues related to EWU student conduct code and recommend changes as needed
Serve as Chief Disciplinary Officer and key campus resource in student conduct, policy, and regulatory matters.
- Investigate alleged violations of the EWU Student Conduct Code and chair hearing panels
- Coordinate case review and related processes with EWU police, Counseling and Wellness Services (CWS), Residence Life, Greek Life, and any other necessary internal/external parties
- Train, recruit, and guide hearing panel members and chair(s), as applicable
- Provide expert advice and consultation to administrators, faculty, and staff, and the community in matters related to student conduct administration and policy interpretation
- Provide counsel and support to students seeking assistance with conflicts, behavioral concerns, or other personal issues
- Serve on campus/community leadership committees, educating others about student affairs and student conduct policies/programs, advocating for student concerns, and developing partnerships that promote and sustain appropriate student behaviors
Foster community outreach and education
- Develop and deliver programs to educate the student campus community regarding the EWU Code of Conduct and student rights/responsibilities
- Facilitate workshops and programs designed to foster students skill development in conflict management/resolution, responsible decision-making, and self-efficacy
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with campus and community stakeholders, including faculty, students, staff, neighbors, campus and local/city law enforcement authorities, local government officials, alumni, parents, and local businesses.
Conditions of Employment:
This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value, as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment.
All new employees must comply with EWU Immunization Policy 602-02 and provide proof of immunity or vaccination to MMR before beginning work at EWU. Waivers for the immunization requirements are available for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs.
