Job Description:

Madison College is hiring a Student Support Advisor to support our TOPS+ program. In partnership with the Boys and Girls club of Dane County, the TOPS+ program seeks to boost high school success, college readiness, college enrollment and post-secondary degree completion for Dane County students who are traditionally under-represented and under-resourced in higher education. The Student Support Advisor will play a key role in developing and delivering comprehensive academic and career advising, along with academic support services. This position will begin by working with second-semester seniors in the AVID program within the Madison Metropolitan School District to promote the TOPS+ program. The Advisor will continue supporting students throughout their application and enrollment process and provide guidance as they progress toward graduation from Madison College or transfer to another institution for further education. Anticipated start date for this position is January 13, 2025.

This position is housed in Retention Initiatives and Student Engagement (RISE) a division within Student Access and Success. This position reports to the Associate Manager, TOPS+.

This is a Full Time, salaried, 40 hours per week position. Work is generally within the Core office hours of 8:00am to 6:00 pm, M-F, with an occasional Saturday if need for events. This position allows for some remote work.

This position is a renewable grant-funded position with funding through June 30, 2027. Continuation beyond 2027 is contingent upon ongoing funding.

Responsibilities:
  • Provides individual and group academic and career advising (programs of study, transfer, graduation, career exploration, and decision making using a variety of resources appropriate to the students' needs) to a caseload of 300+ students.
  • Develops and monitors individualized Personalized Educational Plans for participants. Interprets test scores, instruments, etc. to evaluate students' skills, abilities and interests related to their education/career plans. Participates in and supports learner success strategies, programs, and course advocating for the needs of students' cultural differences and uniqueness.
  • Works collaboratively with college faculty, advisors, financial aid office, career counseling, transfer center, and other departments to coordinate services to RISE students.
  • Prepares and presents classroom and information presentations on RISE program services and activities to stakeholders and community partners. Provides information and referral for additional support services including study skills, counseling, Veteran's services, financial planning, AODA services and conflict resolution.
  • Attends professional meetings and training sessions. Actively participates in Advising and LAT Pod meetings.

Miscellaneous:
  • Assists in participant intake, which includes the development of public relations materials and promotional activities and articulates the purpose and intent of RISE across the District and in the community.
  • Prepares and submits reports, including monthly, quarterly mid-year and end-of year reports, in a timely fashion.
  • Serves on or as a liaison for institutional committees and workgroups.
  • Maintains a commitment to the college mission, vision and values.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Skill in communicating effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated skill in communications and human relations with populations of diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds and persons with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of Student Development and Learning College theory and principles to include knowledge of CAS standards for academic and career advising and NACADA core values and their application in program delivery.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of developmental, academic and career advising skills for students of assigned program to include knowledge of transfer opportunities, program and degree requirements, certifications, admission/petitioning processes, and other pertinent information to deliver effective advising.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully support and collaborate with individuals at all levels in the organization in a team-based environment as well as working independently.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and resolution techniques and strategies.
  • Demonstrated research and presentation skills and the ability to plan, promote, conduct and implement events, educational workshops, trainings and programs.


Minimum Qualifications:

1. Bachelor's degree

2. Two (2) years related experience with at least 1 year of successful training or experience in a program or a related advising, retention or enrichment program that focuses on academic and personal success and serves under-represented populations, at-risk or secondary or postsecondary students or students with disabilities.
