Job Description
The Assistant Manager supports the Store Manager in overseeing daily operations and managing full-time and student employees at the Student Union VolShop and VolSnacks. Key responsibilities include hiring, training, and coaching staff to ensure excellent customer service, product knowledge, and operational efficiency.

This role involves performing store opening and closing procedures, ensuring accurate cashiering practices, and managing staff scheduling. The Assistant Manager serves as the Manager on Duty during weekends, peak shopping periods, athletic events, and whenever the Store Manager is unavailable. The position may require occasional on-campus travel for VolShop events


Responsibilities
Inventory Management

Ensure accurate inventory controls at all times using NetSuite ERP and other inventory management systems. Responsibilities include processing store transfers, verifying product receipts, and conducting regular cycle counts to maintain precise stock levels. All inventory-related tasks must be completed accurately and within designated deadlines.

Key duties include:
  • Resolving pricing and scanning discrepancies, applying markdowns, and reporting SKU issues to the Buying and IT teams
  • Overseeing stockroom employees to ensure merchandise is processed efficiently and stockroom organization is maintained
  • Communicating daily with the Distribution Center to ensure prompt product receipt
  • Adhering to visual merchandising guidelines when placing products on the sales floor
  • Collaborating with store management to seasonally rotate displays and maintain an exceptional sales floor appearance


Supervision of Employees and Daily Operations

Responsible for training and overseeing student employees, ensuring smooth daily operations.

Key duties include:
  • Training and Coaching: Train student employees on cash register procedures, customer service, product knowledge, and store policies, while providing ongoing coaching to improve performance.
  • Scheduling & Payroll: Adjust staff hours in payroll system, assist with scheduling in When2Work, and support the hiring and training of new employees in collaboration with the HR Manager.
  • Store Operations: Perform opening and closing procedures, ensuring all cashiers follow store and University policies. Address cashier-related issues, including errors, and ensure registers are stocked with necessary supplies (e.g., forms, bags, receipt tape).
  • Leadership: Serve as Store Manager in their absence, making key operational decisions as needed.
  • Collaboration: Attend VolShop departmental meetings to stay informed on policies, procedures, and store initiatives.

Customer Service

Responsible for delivering exceptional customer service and ensuring a positive shopping experience for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Customer Interaction: Assist customers in-store, over the phone, and via email, addressing concerns and resolving issues promptly and professionally.
  • Issue Resolution: Investigate and clarify charges, returns, and account discrepancies in collaboration with the Accounting Department to ensure accurate resolutions.
  • Service Excellence: Partner with the Customer Excellence team to uphold high service standards and implement ongoing customer service training for all employees.
  • Work Environment: Foster a positive and supportive workplace for staff while creating an engaging, seamless shopping experience for customers and University visitors.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma/GED
  • Associate's degree preferred
  • 1-year working in retail industry
  • 1-2 years of previous retail management or similar field (preferred)
