FUNCTION AND SCOPE: The Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) empowers talented undergraduate students from underrepresented backgrounds to pursue careers in science, technology, math, and engineering (STEM), the licensed professions (i.e medicine, law, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, psychology, counseling, social work, architecture, OT/PT)and health-related fields. Students, alumni mentors and faculty work hand-in-hand to increase the presence of underrepresented students in these fields.
The McNair Program prepare eligible participants for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities. Participants are from disadvantaged backgrounds and have demonstrated strong academic potential. Institutions work closely with participants as they complete their undergraduate requirements and encourage them to enroll in graduate programs and then track their progress through to the successful completion of advanced degrees. The goal is to increase the attainment of Ph.D. degrees by students from underrepresented segments of society.
The Assistant Project Director is responsible for the advancement and implementation of the CSTEP/McNair programs. The appointment of the APD is full time; .50% time on each grant for 12 months. The primary duties of the APD are to develop, articulate, and facilitate activities that directly relate to student recruitment, retention, and academic success. The APD reports to the Project Director.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES INCLUDING LEVEL OF SUPERVISION REQUIRED:
Co-designs and implements annual and summer curriculum; instructs as needed
Tracks academic progress of all program participants, intervening where necessary
Advises Scholars in academic areas, e.g., course choices, graduate application process
Travels with CSTEP/McNair Scholars to assist with presentations as necessary
Recommends programmatic interventions to the Project Director
Assists with preparation of grant proposals and annual reports
Promotes the program at recruiting events, including through campus publications
Communicates regularly with students, mentors, and faculty about upcoming events
Submits oral and written reports as needed to the Project Director
Meets regularly with the Director about student progress and meeting grant objectives
Oversees selection and effort of student office assistants and tutors
Assumes full programmatic responsibility in the absence of the Project Director
Represents the program on- and off-campus at professional activities
Continues to professionally develop through self-study, participation in APACS/TRIO
regional and national trainings
Perform other duties as assigned by the Project Director
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's Degree in education, counseling or related field
Minimum of three years' experience working with underrepresented/low-income individuals
Familiarity with SUNY Brockport's campus, policies, procedures and staff (including administration)
Familiarity with the challenges of first-generation college students
Strong attention to detail
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Intermediate computer skills (working knowledge of MS Office – Word, Excel and Access)
A commitment to inclusion of, and respect for, people of all identities and backgrounds
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Demonstrated expertise in student support program implementation
Strong knowledge of SUNY Brockport campus, policies, procedures and staff (including administration)
Previous experience with TRIO or CSTEP Programs
Personal experience in overcoming the circumstances facing our target population
