Position Summary
JOB SUMMARY:
The Director of Student Activities & New Student Orientation is a key leader in the Office of Student Activities and Orientation, which consists of three professional staff members. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs, the Director will provide vision, strategic oversight, and management of all aspects of student engagement. This includes programming, student organization support, new student orientation, leadership development, and student employment. The Director will utilize an integrated, developmental approach to campus life that complements and enhances the university's academic mission, supporting students from orientation through their undergraduate journey.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Leadership and Management:
- Supervise the Assistant Director of Student Engagement, Coordinator of Student Activities, and student employees.
- Oversee the operating budget for Student Activities, Orientation, New Student Programs, and Campus Activities Board, ensuring fiscal responsibility.
- Develop short- and long-term strategic plans for student engagement that align with the college's Strategic Plan.
- Participate in the divisional leadership team and contribute to overall student affairs strategy and operations.
2. Programming and Student Development:
- Ensure the delivery of a comprehensive co- and extra-curricular student life program that complements the university's academic mission.
- Collaborate with campus stakeholders to enhance student engagement, retention, and success.
- Design and oversee major campus-wide programming, including Family, Friends, and Alumni Weekend, Senior Week, and the annual Awards Banquet.
- Assist with the planning and delivery of commencement activities and senior class events.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate a four-year leadership curriculum, including programs like "Leadership Scholars," "Emerging Leaders," and IDS112X Leadership Through Student Engagement Course.
3. Student Clubs and Organizations:
- Advise and support all recognized student clubs and organizations, including the Student Government Association (SGA).
- Oversee and manage student organizations' initiatives, major campus-wide events, and collaborations with external partners, such as the American Cancer Society on Campus.
- Coordinate the development of student engagement leaders to assist with key events like orientation and Welcome Weekend.
4. Orientation and New Student Programs:
- Design, implement, and evaluate orientation programs for new students in summer, mid-year, and fall.
- Serve as chair of the Orientation Committee and lead initiatives such as Welcome Weekend.
- Work closely with student leaders to coordinate new student programs and provide a seamless transition experience for incoming students.
5. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion:
- Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion by creating an accessible and welcoming learning environment.
- Serve as a campus advocate for the needs of all students, with a focus on supporting neurodiverse students.
- Demonstrate competence in working with a diverse community, fostering inclusive engagement opportunities.
Additional Responsibilities:
Tier Structure:
Subject to the completion of a Remote Work Agreement, this is a Tier 2 - Hybrid/flex position requiring on-campus work while allowing for some remote work as well.
Supervisory Responsibility:
This position supervises a team of two employees.
Minimum Education level:
A master's degree in a related field (higher education; student development; counseling), and a minimum of 3 - 5 years pertinent, student activities experience are required.
Computer skills:
proficiency in Microsoft Office, event management software, competence in electronic modes of communication (including social media), and database management.
Other Requirements of the Job:
The preferred candidate will demonstrate an employment history of progressively increasing responsibilities (including supervisory experience). The candidate must have a thorough working knowledge, and commitment, to student development and learning outcomes theories. Preferred qualities include: the ability to lead and develop staff; excellent interpersonal skills; ability to handle multiple assignments concurrently; ability to anticipate problems and reconcile conflicts.
Core competencies: communication, fiscal management, managerial skills.
